Single Crochet Stitches

Single crochet stitches are great for beginners. They create a dense fabric that can be altered and customized depending on which loops you work through. The foundation for amigurumi patterns for 3D items, these stitches are essential to learn!

Single Crochet Stitch

The single crochet (abbreviated sc) is the building block for all your crochet projects and one of the most common ones a beginner learns. This stitch consists of creating a foundation chain and a series of yarn overs.

Single Crochet Ribbing

Crochet ribbing closely resembles knitting ribbing, and can be achieved with a combination of simple stitches, usually worked in the back loops only.

Slip Stitch

The slip stitch (abbreviated sl st) is the smallest of all crochet stitches and is used to join stitches that are worked in rounds. It's the most basic stitch every crocheter should know.

Spider Stitch

This stitch has a beautiful texture that creates a round shape which shares a resemblance with a spider web. If you can chain and single crochet it will be easy for you to learn how to crochet the spider stitch.

(Even) Berry Stitch

This is such a fun stitch that creates a thick and solid fabric. It shares similarities to the bobble stitch with a slight variation, with thick bumps that resemble berries.

Star Stitch

The star stitch creates beautiful star or flower shapes in the fabric. It’s condensed and squishy. One of the most perfect crochet stitches for blankets. It would look beautiful in a baby’s or child’s room.

Bobblet Stitch

The Bobblet Stitch in crochet is a fun way to add texture to your work. This stitch is the tiny little “bobbles” or “bobblets” that adds subtle texture that would be great for baby blankets, afghans, hats, and more!

Grit Stitch

A cute twist on a simple single crochet. It's a dense, bumpy stitch that is tightly textured and so much fun to work up. This stitch starts with a Chain a multiple of 2 + 1, plus 2 for the foundation chain.

V-Stitch

The V-stitch technique is very easy to learn, works up quickly, and creates an openwork pattern suitable for afghans. This stitch starts with a multiple of 3+7 stitches. If you know how to double crochet, chain, and skip stitches, you can easily learn this stitch.

Trinity Stitch

The Trinity stitch is made up of rows of single crochets that start in the same stitch that the previous stitch ended, creating a ‘star-like’ texture. It’s fun and easy to stitch, and would look beautiful in scarves, gloves, or hats.

Whip Stitch

A whip stitch is a simple sewing stitch that is used in crocheting, knitting and sewing, and in which the needle is passed in and out of the fabric in a series of stitches that circle an edge of the fabric.

Mattress Stitch

The mattress stitch, also known as the invisible seam or invisible weaving, is a very flexible seam that works best for sewing garment pieces together because it makes for a flat, invisible seam. You always work this stitch with the right sides facing up so you can make sure the seam is invisible on its best side.

Half Double Crochet Stitches

These build on the single stitch above by adding a small extra step and height-wise is in between the single and double stitch. They offer a little more open space so it's great for building fabric and creating projects quickly, while still being warm enough.

Half Double Crochet Stitch

The half double crochet (abbreviated hdc) stitch is a simple stitch that works up between a single crochet and double crochet in height. It has a yarn over similar to double crochet and draws through three loops.

Etched Half Double Stitch

A simple and attractive stitch pattern that alternates rows of half doubles with rows of slip stitches. The slip stitches create a strong line defining each row.

Crunch Stitch

The Crunch Stitch is made up of two repeated stitches (half double crochet and slip stitch) that appear to have a crunched texture. This stitch is great for everything from dish scrubbers and potholders to afghans.

Simple Marguerite Stitch

Also known as the star stitch for its ‘spikes’ and adds a fun, dense look to any project.

Wattle Stitch

This is a simple, elegant, and reversible stitch with a beautiful texture. It’s constructed with a combination of single crochet, chain, and double crochet.

Moss Stitch

The Moss Stitch is made by combining single crochets and chains. It is suitable for both beginner and advanced crocheters. This stitch creates a beautiful texture and flowy fabric, making it useful for a wide variety of projects.

Double Crochet Stitches

The double crochet stitch is the foundation for many popular projects including the humble granny square and helps change the look of otherwise basic projects depending on which loops are worked through. It's also great for things like cuffs, blankets, and hatbands!

Double Crochet Stitch

The double crochet (abbreviated dc) is another basic stitch that you’ll learn when you first begin to crochet. It’s twice as tall as a single crochet and its versatility makes it useful for a number of projects.

DC Herringbone Stitch

The Herringbone Stitch is a reversible, textured stitch suitable for many project types. It follows a 2-row repeat and uses only single crochet.

Suzette Stitch

This beautiful and unique stitch is a combination of single and double crochets. The Suzette stitch involves working two stitches into one stitch, then skipping a stitch. This produces a sturdy fabric that any crocheter can do after learning the basic stitches.

Iris Stitch

This elegant and beginner-friendly stitch is worked by chaining multiples of 4+3 and produces a holey fabric. It is ideal for summer garments such as a poncho, shawl, or a light throw.

Griddle Stitch

The griddle stitch is an easy stitch using a combination of basic beginner crochet stitches to create a thick and ‘bumpy’ texture. It’s wonderful for using in clothing or blankets.

Crumpled Griddle Stitch

This is a variation of the Griddle Stitch, except the Crocheter is placing single crochets and double crochets on top of the single and double crochets of the previous row. Whereas, the regular Griddle Stitch has the single and double crochets alternating, respectively, each row.

Primrose Stitch

This is another very pretty crochet stitch with a lovely texture. It’s a 2-row repeat stitch pattern, that you’ll be able to get the hang of very quickly. The first row creates the bottom part of the shell and the second row creates the fan part of the shell.

Cluster Stitch

Cluster Stitch is a variation on the traditional granny stitch. It includes three double crochet cluster stitches, and a row of the moss stitch.

Front Post/Back Post DC

The front post double crochet is a raised crochet stitch on the surface of the fabric facing you. For front post stitches you insert your hook from front to back to front. While the Back Post Double Crochet is a method for making texture on the right side of your fabric, it’s a great technique used in cables, ribbing, simulated stitches, and basketweaves.

Bead Stitch

An eye-catching stitch that is worked sideways by working around a double crochet instead of into the stitches of the previous row.

Granny Cluster Stitch

This stitch is familiar as the basis for Granny Squares, where three double crochet blocks are worked in the round, with blocks worked between two blocks on subsequent rounds.

Block Stitch

This modern and versatile stitch works up quickly and creates a visual, eye-catching twist to your projects. It works up quickly and can be customized to suit a variety of projects.

Blanket Stitch

Three stitch repeat pattern consisting of single and double crochets. It’s such a versatile pattern and can be used to create many items beyond blankets. It’s quick, fun, and easy to learn!

Boxed Blocks Stitch

The clean lines of this pattern give it modern appeal, and the large spaces lend drape to fabric. The blocks consist of five double crochet stitches worked into chain-three spaces.

Thermal Stitch

One of the thickest crochet stitches, this stitch adds weight and warmth to any crochet project. To do this stitch, all you’ll need to know is the basic single crochet.

Basketweave Stitch

The basketweave stitch mimics a dense, woven look. This is excellent for afghans, heavy weight sweaters, and potholders to keep you toasty during the cooler months.

Tall/Short Stitch

This stitch pattern offers an easy way to work with basic stitches and create a lively surface. Two stitches of different heights, single crochet and double crochet, alternate in groups of four across the row.

Straight & Tilted Stitch

The interesting feature of this pattern is the alternation of a row of vertical stitches with another row where the stitches slant.

Larksfoot Stitch

This stitch creates a delicate pattern with lots of texture. Completed with an extended double crochet, this stitch also introduces the 'spike' to add interest and detail.

Waffle Stitch

The Waffle Stitch closely resembles its namesake and creates amazing texture for your projects. It is made up of a series of double crochets and front post double crochets.

Crossed Towers Stitch

The crossing of the cable is achieved by skipping two stitches then working post stitches into the skipped stitches, 3 different heights of stitches are used. The distance between cables can be as many stitches as you like.

Bobble Stitch

The bobble stitch can be made with any combination of partial double crochet stitches in the same stitch. The more partial double crochets you include in your 'bobble' (4, 5, 6, etc.), the bigger the bobble.

Cluster V Stitch

Unlike the cluster stitch, which is a grouping of either single, half, double or treble stitches all completed in the same stitch, the Granny Stitch generally consists of three partial double crochets, placed in the previous row's chain-2 spaces.

Back Post Stitch

This classic post stitch is worked into the post of the stitch a row (or two) below. Post stitches are usually staggered or alternate across a row, or in the round. Pro tip: Loops must be long enough that the work doesn't buckle.

Arruga Stitch

This reversible stitch uses a combination of front post and back post single crochets to create a chunky texture design that is simple and fairly quick to learn. The weight of this stitch makes it ideal for afghans, sweaters, and scarves.

Easy Shell Stitch

If you’re looking for one of the most unique crochet stitches, try out the shell stitch. It’s so simple to learn to crochet this stitch but it looks really impressive.

Zig-Zag Blocks Stitch

The blocks here are alternating groups of three single crochet and three double crochet, with three chains between them. The chains zigzag because of the different heights of stitches across the row.

Treble Crochet Stitches

The treble crochet stitch is a basic crochet stitch that you'll probably use in a variety of crochet patterns. Triple crochet is another name for it. It's comparable to a double crochet stitch, except it's a little bit taller.

Triplets Stitch

(FP/BPdc) The triplets stitch is a lovely textured stitch that has no large holes. It’s great for blankets, washcloths, sweaters, scarves and more.

Double Treble/Triple Stitch

The Double Treble (or Triple) crochet uses the same principles as the double crochet and uses three yarn overs before entering the fabric instead of one. This creates a loose fabric that is commonly used in lacy designs.

Treble/Triple Stitch

A treble crochet or triple crochet (abbreviated tr) is taller than a double crochet and is made by working two yarn overs at the start of the stitch, instead of one yarn over as for double crochet.
